My Top Ten Easter Baking and Craft Ideas for Children

Mar 14, 2025

This is a collation of my top ten favourite baking and craft activities to do with the children over the Easter break.

Easter is the perfect time to get creative in the kitchen and around the craft table, especially with little hands eager to help. Whether you’re baking delicious treats or making fun DIY decorations, these activities are a great way to bring the family together and celebrate the season. In New Zealand, Easter falls in autumn, giving us the chance to add a unique Kiwi twist to traditional festivities—think homemade hot cross buns, chocolate treats with Whittaker’s, and adorable autumn-themed crafts.

From simple, mess-free crafts for toddlers to tasty recipes the whole family can enjoy, this list of top ten Easter baking and craft ideas will keep your little ones entertained and create wonderful holiday memories. So, grab your aprons, gather your craft supplies, and let’s hop into the Easter spirit!

Let’s begin with a recipe of mine.

Hot Cross Buns

A QUICK EFFICIENT WAY TO MAKE A BATCH OF HOT CROSS BUNS THIS EASTER WITHOUT ALL THE FUSS.

I love hot cross buns, although whenever I see a tradiotnal recipe I get intimidated by all the ingredients and steps!

Not with this recipe!
All you need is a bread maker and a large brownie tin.

A craft by Quiet Life Farm

Fabric Easter Eggs that can be filled with goodies, and are a great replacement for those plastic ones! |

Here’s a free (printable!) pattern and tutorial for how to make your very own that can be reused year after year

A wonderful alternative are fabric Easter Eggs! Fabric Easter Eggs are plastic-free, more durable than their plastic counterparts, and in my opinion much more lovely to look at!

These healthy Easter eggs made from fresh fruit are fun, easy Easter treats you can make for, and with children.

The pieces of fruit are simply cut into the shape of easter eggs and decorated. Stacey has some great tips to get the best results.

Painted Easter Rocks

These Easter egg rocks were so easy to make and turned out great! They would look beautiful as part of your Easter decor or you could even hide them outside as part of a fun non-candy Easter egg hunt.

My backdoor is littered with rocks collected from little adventures and excursions. This is a great way to give them another purpose (than cluttering the doorway). Click here for the process.

Easter Puzzle Biscuits

A recipe from the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly Food Website.

These Easter cookies are so much fun to make, especially when you have little helpers in the kitchen to decorate them for you. Get the kids to show their creative side this Easter with fun colour and design on these sweet treats.
