Easy Savoury Pizza Scrolls

by | Jul 27, 2023

A super quick and tasty savoury scroll recipe.

Perfect for smoko, a morning tea shout, a fuelling snack after kids sports, or a substitute for a sandwich in the kids lunch boxes.

The possibilities are endless.

What shall I use as fillings?
I have used tomato relish, chopped bacon and cheese in mine.
But I have purposely left the filling ideas vague. You know what you like on your homemade pizzas. Just simply chop them up and place them inside these delicious wee morsels.

What type of cheese should I use?
I like to use a cheese with flavour.
Something like our New Zealand Tasty or Colby. But I also know cheese is very expensive at the moment. So you just use what you have in your fridge.

Can I freeze them?
These are great in the freezer.
Just simply place in an airtight container or an airtight bag. Bring out as many as you need at a time. These are great in a lunch boxes, or an after work/school snack.

If you like the idea of a scroll.

Tasty Savoury Pizza Scrolls

A super easy recipe for a fuelling snack

Pizza Scroll Dough

  • 3 cups high grade flour
  • 3 tsp sure bake yeast ((or 1 ½ tsp of dried active yeast))
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp honey ((or white sugar))
  • 280 mls warm water ((36℃ if you want to be precise))
  • 3 tbsp olive oil

Fillings

  • 150 grams grated flavoursome cheese ((Colby or tasty))
  • ½ cup tomato relish ((you can add more if you like))
  • ¼ cup chopped bacon or ham
  • Or anything else you think would be delicious in here. You decide and make them how you would enjoy them!

Making the pizza scroll dough

  1. You may choose to make it in your bread maker, in the cake mixer or by hand.

  2. Bread Maker – choose the dough setting. It will kneed it and allow the dough to rise once.

  3. Cake mixer – place all dough ingredients in the cake mixer with the dough hook attachment. Kneed until the dough is elastic and smooth. Cover with a damp tea towel and allow to rise in a warm spot.

  4. By Hand – Place all the ingredients in a large bowl and combine. Use clean hands to kneed the dough on a clean floured surface. Kneed until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place back into the bowl (cleaned and oiled) cover with a damp tea towel and allow to rise in a warm spot.

  5. Once the dough has risen once. Punch down with a clean hand and turn out onto a clean and floured surface.

  6. Use a rolling pin to roll a rectangle shape (about 40cmx20cm).

  7. Preheat your oven to 200℃

Fillings

  1. Spread your tomato relish all over the pizza dough.

  2. Top with your desired toppings.

  3. Lastly add your grated cheese.

Pizza scroll construction and cooking

  1. Gently roll the dough into up tight into a long sausage.

  2. Use a share knife to divide the dough in half. Then divide each half in half again. You will have four equal quarters.

  3. Divide each quarter in to three. You will now have twelve equal sized scrolls.

  4. Place into a lightly greased muffin tray and bake until golden and delicious looking (about 15-20 minutes – but remember every oven is different and check often to determine how long your scrolls need).
